The Story...

This artwork captures the vivid imagery of a little pond fish who dreams to fly and explore beyond the water they've outgrown. It tells a story of someone with strong determination and ambition to reach their goal despite many failed attempts, which in turn inspires others along the way. These themes of transformation, freedom and success are illustrated within each hand painted element.

Magical winged fish leap out of the birdbath to fly, even attracting the attention of a shocked gnome. The metaphor of these fish growing their wings is a powerful representation of our own human ambitions, failures and successes. The more we try, the closer we get. Where there’s a wing, there’s a way!

Illustration Process...

The windchimes and sea shells are synonymous with good fortune and the dragonflies symbols of change and adaptability. The strong stone bird bath is a supportive structure and signifies positivity and aid which is surrounded by a bed of colourful flowers symbolising fidelity and love.

Illustrations were made using watercolours and inks, then digitally scanned and edited to be made into the final scarf design.

Manufacture...

Once the final artwork is completed, the design is sent for printing. The scarves are digitally printed onto lovely silk or gorgette fabric in the UK with sustainable water based inks, with an OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certification - in other words, no harmful inks are used.

To finish them off, I hem the edges and they can now be worn all year round as scarves!
